Pregnancy & Postpartum Mental Health

The transition to motherhood is one of the most significant biological and psychological events in a woman’s life. While often portrayed as a time of universal joy, many women experience "Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders" (PMADs), including depression, anxiety, OCD, or birth trauma. At Vita Psychiatry for Women, Dr. Danielle Craig provides a medically specialized approach to perinatal mental health. We understand the complexities of managing mental health while balancing the safety of a developing baby. Whether you are navigating infertility, a high-risk pregnancy, or the "baby blues" that won't go away, we provide the clinical expertise and compassionate guidance needed to help you and your family thrive.

Our Process

Providing a clear and supportive roadmap for your wellness journey.

Preconception & Pregnancy Consultation

We begin with a 75-minute evaluation to discuss your mental health history and goals. For those planning a pregnancy, we provide specialized "Risk-Benefit" consultations to create a proactive plan for medication and wellness.

Collaborative Obstetric Care

Mental health is an essential part of prenatal care. Dr. Craig coordinates directly with your OB/GYN, midwife, or fertility specialist to ensure your psychiatric treatment is integrated into your overall birth and postpartum plan.

Postpartum Recovery & Stabilization

The "Fourth Trimester" is a critical window. We provide high-touch follow-up care in the weeks and months following birth, monitoring for symptoms of PPD or PPA and adjusting treatments to support sleep, bonding, and recovery.

Breastfeeding & Medication Safety

We utilize the latest clinical data to manage medications while breastfeeding. Dr. Craig provides expert guidance on infant exposure levels, helping you make informed decisions that prioritize both your mental health and your baby’s nutrition.

Healthy Mother, Healthy Baby

Taking care of your mental health is the best gift you can give your child. Partner with a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in the perinatal period. Short Description: Start your journey toward a supported, healthy motherhood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Providing clarity and peace of mind as you begin your care.

Is it safe to stay on my medication while pregnant?

This is a highly individualized decision. Dr. Craig uses the most current research to help you weigh the risks of medication exposure against the risks of untreated mental health symptoms (which can also impact a pregnancy). Together, we find the "middle path" that is safest for you.

How is Postpartum Depression different from the "Baby Blues"?

The "Baby Blues" typically resolve within two weeks of birth. If you are experiencing persistent sadness, hopelessness, extreme irritability, or a lack of connection to your baby after that window, it may be Postpartum Depression. We provide the clinical tools to help you feel like yourself again.

Do you treat birth trauma or pregnancy loss?

Yes. The journey to motherhood can unfortunately include trauma or loss. Dr. Craig provides a sensitive, medical-based approach to the psychiatric symptoms that can follow these experiences, ensuring you are supported with dignity.

Can my partner be involved in the sessions?

While we focus on your individual psychiatric care, we welcome the involvement of partners in certain discussions, especially when creating a "Postpartum Wellness Plan" or discussing medication safety during pregnancy.
